The South West is the home of hot air ballooning. In the 1960s, the first modern hot air balloon flights took place in Bristol, laying the foundations for a tradition that would travel the world.

Rooted in our heritage, hot air ballooning is an integral part of the show. Every sunrise and sunset, we hold a balloon meet in the centre of the festival. You can get up close and watch them take off around you, or take flight yourself and experience the show like you’re looking down at a map.

Flights last anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour and a half, depending on the weather conditions, and part of the joy is never truly knowing where you’re going to end up. You’ll ascend to somewhere between 2,500 and 5,000 ft above sea level, meaning in the space of an hour you’ll have been five times higher than The Shard in London, and just brushed the basket against the tops of trees on your way down.

You can purchase hot air balloon flights on our booking page.
